Earlier this month, the experts in augmented reality at the company Layar further revolutionized their “real world object recognition tool” by opening the platform to advertisers. Many are saying that this is the death of the QR code, as brands have been somewhat slow to adopt the “ugly-ish” codes in the middle of their creative.
For those who haven’t seen it yet….Layar’s new update will use your smartphone’s camera to recognize images [advertisements/logos/etc…] and add content to those objects right on your phone screen. It enables some really cool things from interactive videos to virtual clothing, games and more (see Layar’s demo video HERE….go ahead, I’ll wait).
There are a number of mobile interaction technologies fighting for space at the moment…
- The 800 number
- Crafty web URL’s
- The SMS short code
- The QR code
- The standard bar code
- Audio Recognition
- Augmented Reality
- Object Recognition
- And surely some REALLY cool stuff no one’s thought of yet….
It’s hard to tell who’s really going to win because even with their advantages, all of them have some big shortcomings (hardware, software, specialized apps, etc…). One thing is clear, with advertisers looking for more ways to engage you and your eyeballs, there’s a lot of motivation to get something widely adopted.
Regardless of what shakes out in this space, there’s FANTASTIC news for us every day geeks out there…. Yesterday, Layar released Stiktu, an app that gives YOU the ability to tag objects around you with Augmented Reality. While this isn’t the first app I’ve seen like this, it definitely works better than others and is available on Android and iPhone!
In just a few minutes at work, I enabled my name tag with a fun message for those who have the app….so go download it, what are you waiting for?
